What is

Shares

A stock is a financial instrument that confirms ownership of a portion of a company. Shareholders can participate in managing the business through voting at shareholder meetings and receive a portion of the company’s profits in the form of dividends.

There are two main types of stocks:

Common stocks provide shareholders with voting rights and participation in dividend distribution. Typically, each share grants one vote at the general meeting of shareholders.

Preferred stocks provide priority in profit distribution and compensation in the event of company bankruptcy but do not grant voting rights.

Why Do Companies Issue Stocks?

Stocks serve two important functions:

Raising capital. Selling stocks allows a company to obtain additional funds for business development, investments, and new projects.

Enhancing trust and reputation. Being listed on a stock exchange makes a company more transparent and attractive to potential

investors.

Listing Stocks on the Stock Exchange
To list stocks on a stock exchange, a company must undergo several procedures to confirm its reliability and compliance with established requirements. Each exchange aims to admit only strong issuers, setting criteria for share capital size, profitability levels, and corporate standards.

Every stock has a nominal value — calculated as the ratio of the company’s authorized capital to the number of issued shares. However, this figure does not reflect the actual market price.

Market Value of Stocks
After being listed, the price of a stock is determined by the market and can be equal to or slightly higher than its nominal value. The market value of stocks depends on many factors, the most important being the company’s financial performance and investor interest.
